The metamorphosis of substation automation technology and the widespread application of the microcomputer protection technology greatly improve the automation level and management level of the power grid. The inconsistency of communication protocol between substation automation equipment and control system result in the difficulty of seamless integration, poor operability between equipment and equipment, short life cycle and difficulty of secondary upgrade. At the same time, the real-time control and transport between the primary equipment and secondary protection equipment, the analog signal of background monitoring system and ‘four remote' signal need lots of cables to connect, which increase the expenditure of human and financial resources and decrease the anti-interference. At present, the IEC61850 standards open up a new way for the development of digital substation, make the communication of equipment within the substation has a unified standard, alleviate the contradiction of operating each other between the equipments,and effectively improve the reliability of communication. Electronic transformers,intelligent switchgear, the training simulation of the substation operation and on-line state detection technology provide the technology support for the digital substation transformation. Therefore, based on the related theory and technology of digital substation, the development course of digital substation system and the present situation of the development of digital technology were expounded. The whole theoretical framework of digital substation was initially formed, based on which the practical engineering and construction scheme for the 110 kV digital transformation of Turpan substation were analyzed. By building a hierarchical structure, the communication structure with three-layer network for digital substation was realized,and some problems such as equipment type selection and compatibility mode were discussed. The basic principles of the process bus and the substation bus were detailedly analyzed. Finally, the communication network structure in the digital substation was analyzed.
