The scale of power system is becoming larger along with the implement of national network engineering, it bring huge challenge to safety and stability of power system. Existing protection device and automatic safety control device can only reflect a small area of operating state but safe operating state of larger area in power system, coordination and cooperation are lacking among various devices and it could not achieve optimal control for system. So that the safety of system descend when some fault occur to any pot of system, and it would cause continuous action for protection device and automatic safety control device. Because the coordination and cooperation are lacking, it may expand sphere of influence caused by fault and some serious accident such as cascading trips may happen. wide area protection could solve above problems effectively, distinguished with traditional line protection, based on the wide area measurement information detected by wide area protection system, wide area make information measurement and comprehensive analysis for fault information and switch position in wide area so that it obtain the correct protection strategy which bring advantages to the function of optimal and coordination for the whole system.The article introduce the basic principle and implementation scheme of wide area protection, analysis its characteristics of tree different structures including distributed,decentralized, and hierarchical distributed wide area protection, and it give specific evaluation of practical application of three different structures from economic and instantaneity. According to the actual situation of Hebei Southern Power grid it adopt hierarchical distributed wide area protection and it design corresponding structure, function, and configuration of master situation, substation, and communication system. It propose a communication scheme base on wide area protection information of power dispatching data network, and it analysis the demand for performance of communication network. Confirming the communication and information transmission method of wide area protection network based on IP over SDH with MPLS VPN, it design an actual communication system of wide area protection. Finally, simulation model of communication system is constructed in OPNET Modeler 14.5, and it demonstrate the instantaneity and reliability of protection information in different condition.
