The wide-area backup protection(WABP) is able to improve the performances of the traditional backup protection, the WABP can speed up the protection operation and simplify the calculation of the setting. But the WABP involves too many facilities and large amount of information, so how to ensure the correct operation of the protection in the case of information loss and information errors is the key point of the WABP study. However, the fault-tolerance performance of the WABP algorithm should be improved. At present, the PPP communication-based serial communication mode is widely used in the power telecommunication network, its low transmission rate can't meet the demands for high real-time ability. This paper mainly studies the ways to improve the fault-tolerance performance of the WABP algorithm and establish the WABP communication network which can meet the demands for high real-time ability.A wide-area backup protection algorithm which is based on Ant Colony Algorithm was presented in this paper. This algorithm was succeeded in fault discrimination by using the three groups of status information: direction component?distance protection section ? and ? section, and improved the fault-tolerance performance by building the evaluation function and adopting the optimizing strategy of the Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. The MATLAB programming realized the WABP algorithm which is based on Ant Colony Algorithm, the analyses of numerical example demonstrated the WABP algorithm has better fault-tolerance.The functions and characteristics of the WABP algorithm were analyzed. According to the IEC 61850 standard modeling method, the information model of the WABP IED were established, the IED contains logical nodes and logical device, and the interaction process between logical nodes of the WABP was analyzed in detail. The establishment of the information model is conducive to the realization of seamless connection between devices and reducing the time required for data conversion.Finally, the data flow and time delay requirement of the wide-area backup protection communication network were analyzed, and the characteristics of existing exchange technology and network mode were summarized, a IP over SDH communication network scheme was put forward in this paper, which is integrated with MPLS technology. Using OPNET to carry out the modeling analysis of the communication scheme, the simulation results showed that this scheme could fully satisfy the real-time requirement of the WABP communication network.
