The polar crane is a specialized bridge structured crane that travels on circular rail on top of the reactor building within a nuclear power plant. During the construction phase of the nuclear power plant, the polar crane is used to lift heavy equipment including the steam generator, reactor vessel, pressurizer, upper and lower internals, and other necessary equipment used within the reactor building. Once the power plant is operational, the polar crane becomes the primary equipment used for the required periodic refueling and service needs as well as assisting any maintenance and repair related hoisting needs within the reactor building. The polar crane is therefore one of the most critical hoisting equipment used in a nuclear power plant.Safety is the most important issue when it gets to the nuclear power plant. The plant should be adequately designed to withstand load and stay under control when natural disaster like earthquake were to take place. The polar crane should not only be able to reliably hoist rated load under normal working conditions, but also be able to hold the critical load under the presence of seismic activities, and to prohibit any components from dropping off the crane. The horizontal guided device provides the safety measure to ensure the polar crane to travel safe on its circular orbit.The paper relying on the localization process of the third general polar crane designs and researches horizontal guided device which should meet the seismic requirements of polar crane and with proprietary intellectual property. The design load and safety requirements of the horizontal guided device can be determined according to the seismic response spectrum by using spectral analysis method. Through the research and analysis of the dynamic response of the polar crane under seismic activities, determines the required performance, features of the horizontal guided device. From that establish the design basis for the horizontal guided device.Refer to international advanced and apply for patent protection of the horizontal guide device, including its function realization principle, the process of applying load, the performance parameters for key parts, the horizontal guided device of a new type of structure, meets the crane load of different conditions has been designed by using the modern design method.Verify the strength of the structure and components for the new horizontal guided device to meet the requirements of the load.The new design of the horizontal guide device evades the foreign patent protection. Not only achieves the performance of foreign patents, but also make some improvements in the block design and other aspects.The conducted research lays the foundations for the development of proprietary intellectual property technology for the horizontal guided device used for the polar crane.
