X-ray can on-line measure the circuit breaker, wire and cable, gas insulated switchgear(GIS), transformers, transformers and other electrical equipments for nondestructive testing. Employees can improve work efficiency by using X-ray detection technology. But the effects of X-ray on the electrical equipment insulation are uncertain. Therefore, the effect of-ray on the electrical properties of polyethylene insulation materials under different radiant energy and radiation time should be studied. The study and results can be taken as a reference for using of X-ray digital imaging detection technology for power equipments' visual inspection. The following works have been done.1) First, let X-ray radiate polyethylene material at different time durations and intensities. Then, experiments using SEM test polyethylene morphology, crystallinity was calculated using X-ray diffraction size.2) Second, the surface resistivity, volume resistivity, dielectric loss and dielectric constant of the radiated polyethylene materials were studied. These parameters are measured and resulting data are analyzed in the second part.3) Finally, we do destructive testing of polyethylene after radiation. These destructive tests include the breakdown electric field experiment and the electrical tree growth experiment.Conclusion: The surface of Polyethylene material has been cracked, and preferred orientation changed, after a long time of radiation. Charged radiation is more serious than the non charged sample. Radiation is not particularly significant effects on dielectric constant; Dielectric loss by radiation intensity impact, high intensity radiation increases the parameter values; With increasing irradiation time,the surface resistance rised first and then decreased. The higher the irradiation power is,the lower the resistance will be. With the increase of the radiation time and intensity,the breakdown field strength decreases, so the intensity and time of irradiation need to be limited. The volume resistance with irradiation power increased slightly increased,especially the low power level. The growth and development of the electrical tree is affected by the radiation power of the unit area, but effect of high energy irradiation is not obvious.
