In the next generation of smart grid construction process, the intelligent hardware of Internet of Things has been rapidly developed in recent years. Wherein, meter reading system is with new demands in the context of smart grids. The past manual metering, 485 meter reading and meter reading with the power line carrier will all be unable to adapt to development needs in the future. Hence, wireless meter reading system will become the most advanced meter reading in days to come. The application of wireless meter reading system could not only save human and material resources, but also implement a more convenient and real-time interaction between industrial energy sectors and users. Enterprise units could manage datas more easily, while users could protect their rights and interests better. Therefore, research and develop on wireless meter reading system have the profound significance.In this paper, the research significance and its background, domestic and foreign development of wireless meter reading have been elaborated. Moreover, the basic theory of wireless meters reading system has been introduced in detail. These all are solid foundations for the subsequent design and implementation of meters reading module. The wireless meter reading module hareware circuits in both collector and concentrator terminal is complemented, which are surely of standard dimension and accord with the design original intention. The wireless meter reading module software has been designed afterward, where real-time operating system, wireless protocol stack and the operation mechanism of state machine etc have been achieved. Furthermore, there are mode selection and design optimization aspects that the requirements for low-power has been met. Series of experiments and results analysis demonstrate that the proposed wireless meter reading module is designed what it has been designed to be.
