In recent years, the demand of tunnel transportation is increasing gradually and the length of highway tunnels is rising at the same time. It lead to the huge electric energy consumption of tunnel lighting system, which is based on tunnel maximum illumination principle in design specifications, and the increase of the monitor operating costs. How to avoid tunnel electric energy waste, so as to save energy and reduce consumption has become one of the hot issues in this field which needs to be settled. At present, the common solution to the too high operating cost of tunnel lighting system is opening and closing lighting equipment using loop control according to the brightness requirements at different times. However, without taking the real-time change of tunnel traffic volume into consideration, a certain degree of excessive lighting still exists which leads to the electric energy waste. Besides, due to ignoring the tunnel environmental situation variation, the insufficient illumination in both internal and external of tunnel reduces the tunnels safety.Taking the current high tunnel operation cost, huge electricity waste, low integration of the system and other defects into consideration, the paper aims at energy conservation and emissions reduction and takes the realization of an intelligent, dynamic, integrated tunnel lighting system as design idea. In-depth analysis of the relationship between the main factors, including the out hole brightness, real-time traffic volume and speed of traffics,that affect highway tunnel lighting was done. According to the tunnel brightness requirements specification in design of highway tunnel lighting conditions, the tunnel lighting stepless dimming control model with traffic volume awareness was established.The molecular circuits calculation method was first adopted in the model, interpolation calculation values of luminance for each level in the design details were got. The brightness lighting requirements were obtained based on real-time traffic volume under circumstances of different sections and travel speed of the tunnel. It calculates the required output power of lighting lamps and lanterns and compares this power with the actual power of the current lighting system, so as to figure out the dimming coefficient in a certain control cycle. Then control command with the dimming controller of the coefficient can be sent to the dimmer board and the dimming control can be achieved.The functional demand of the system is designed according to the need of the tunnel lighting system, which adjusts to the traffic amount. To make it convenient to log in and use, the log-in page is accustomed to standard B/S design model. Therefore, the system not only satisfy the demands on customer log-in, administration and identification allocation, but also involves functions such as recording and changing in parameters, managing and setting of relevant parts such as emergency parking strip, and settings and modifications of lighting strategy and control. Apart from designs in above particular sections, other parts such as daily records, alarms, and data analysis also need to be planned just as other softwares do.The current popular web development technology RIA was adopted to realize the client-side of monitoring system to improve the real-time and dynamic performance of tunnel lighting system. Tomcat server was selected for the background support which is simple and easy to deploy. Tomcat is a open source light-weighted web server. The tunnel intelligent lighting monitoring service was achieved using small molecule loop brightness analysis and stepless control technology. Finally, the system module function and performance was tested using professional test software. The test results show that the system meet the design requirements basically and achieve the purpose of controlling the tunnel lighting based on real-time traffic volume. The whole system has both good and stable engineering practicability and high practicability.
