The Research On The Aesthetic Value Of The Bricks Application In Environmental Design

The thesis is focusing on the aesthetic cultural value of the brick and brick buildings.Although the brick is degraded into the filler of the architectural frame now, the historical and cultural values of it are still developing. The brick is playing an irreplaceable role in the modern architectures and it is also the important material in the construction industry due to its environment friendly characteristic and low carbon attribute.How to inherit the traditional building skills and find the aesthetic value of the brick buildings are the research emphasis of this thesis.The brick owns favorable attributes and diverse usages. The power of brick buildings'structures and logical aesthetics which rooted in the ground could profoundly move our heart.China is an ancient country enjoys a five thousand years'feudal society history, and brick buildings are infected with the strong ethic colors under such circumstance.In the idea of Chinese traditional aesthetics and conception, brick buildings have a specific figure which is significant for the whole environment. The brick has a positive humanistic value orientation for the environmental design which is coming from the heritage and development of the traditional culture especially its combination with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism the three traditional cultures. Confucianism attaches the importance on the "beauty of emotion", so the beauty of brick buildings of Confucianism is coming from emotions. It not only owns simple and various operations but also emphasizes the design's spiritual value and the love of life. Taoism focuses on the "beauty of nature" which presents a clam and meaningful design. Buddhism believes the "beauty of emptiness", so brick buildings of Buddhism express an empty and casual beauty just like the idea of Buddhism——everything in the world is tolerated in emptiness. All the enlightenments are coinciding with the Chinese traditional aesthetic thoughts and make us deeply reflect on our culture and this also shows the return of the indigenized design. The infinite creativity of the brick explains the reason of its enduring existence.Brick buildings have the practical value for the environment.
