In the contemporary era when the global cultures are interactive,China is an oriental country with cultural inheritance and historical context-is influenced by western cultures. In the collision of Chinese and western cultures, the interior space development of architectures is a part of the cultural sources of architectures. In the primitive society, people burrowed into the ground. With the passage of time, they began to live on the ground.Due to the different philosophies of construction, the palace of Chinese emperors and that of kings of France present different sp atial characteristics.Functionally speaking, both Shenyang Imperial Palace and the Castle of Fontainebleau serve as temporary dwelling palaces of emperors. Moreover, they belong to palace architectures. This paper employs the comparative method to analyze differences between Shenyang Imperial Palace and the Castle of Fontainebleau from the perspective of interior space configuration.First of all,it briefly introduces the development of interior space configuration of Chinese and western architectures in chronological order. It gives typical examples of interior space in each time period to illustrate the preservation and innovation of interior space configuration.Secondly, the paper describes the development and evolution processes of interior space configuration of Shenyang Imperial Palace and the Castle of Fontainebleau. The discussion is respectively carried out from three perspectives: historical backgrounds of the two palaces, evolution processes of space configuration and factors influencing the evolution.Next,it analyzes the morphological characteristics of interior space by analyzing the layout, components, materials and decoration of interior space. Finally, the paper analyzes and summarizes cultural expressions of interior space of the two palaces from the spatiality and spatial representation, spatial significance and presentation and spatial aesthetics and effects. The paper elaborates and comparatively studies the interior space configuration of Shenyang Imperial Palace and the Castle of Fontainebleau. It enriches the theoretical basis of interior space configuration of palaces, which is conductive tofurther researches on the interior space configuration of palaces. Moreover,it puts forward new ideas for the application of interior space components of palaces in design.
