Decorative patterns of the Imperial Palace buildings will never be outdated. The combination of dragon and phoenix patterns heightens imperial power. Those patterns can be found in buildings, bridges, furniture and ceram etc, which are very beautiful and show the wisdom of creators and unique glamour of traditional art of China. The law of modeling, the collocation of color and the expression of meaning give much inspiration to modern decoration.The theory of semeiology includes essence and development law of symbol. The core of semeiology theory is the system of expression and implication which is accomplished by symbol. The branches of semeiology emerge when the theory of semeiology is used in literature, aesthetics, Modeling art and architecture. An American scholar thinks that semeiology is both insight and methodology. So semeiology can be used to verify our universe and our ways of understanding it.This thesis is based on the theory of semeiology and use document analysis, fieldwork method, logical speculation method and Systematic approach to research form of expression, color Composition, styling, color aesthetic function and meaning of expression. This thesis tries to research decorative patterns of the Imperial Palace buildings. In order to inheritate and develop decorative patterns of the Imperial Palace buildings we must absorb its shapes, develop its meanings and spirit.
