Study On The Relationship Between Material Application And Place Expression In Contemporary Architecture

With the development and renewal of the city in recent years, the newly formed place seems to be lack of attraction that makes people aware of the significance created by the atmosphere of place and space. Place is a hot topic of contemporary architecture and material is closely related to place. Both of them have been included into the research system. The researches and experiments on this impact from both theory and practice are being carried out. From the relevance perspective between material and place, this article summarizes positive factors, combining with the evolution of material update, discusses the application strategy of materials in the new period, as a direction to build the place and deepen the connotation of the design.The research starts with the theory of material and place, discusses the relationship from material properties and the definition and characteristics of place, and illustrates it connecting with the theory of phenomenology. Taking "topos" and "time" of material as research perspective, by analyzing the formation conditions that affected by the atmosphere of place and combining with the phenomenological theory, the importance of material applications to the expression of place under the impact of "topos" and "time" is explained. The article illustrates the "topos", from the perspective of material expression, regional characteristics, new material introduction and manner of construction. In addition, from the perspectives of "time”, the article reveals the evolution of material, the interactions between light and material as well as the effect and significance of the way that human's behavior influences on the sense of place shaping instantaneously and permanently. Finally, some summaries and conclusions are illustrated. Combined with domestic and foreign case studies, some significant operating strategies are formed and the relevance of development of future material and place is forecasted.Material application and place expression are both practical conceptual issues and the characteristics on the research methods are practical, theoretical and historical, which are reasoned to solve through the case analysis, literature research and investigation. Dissertation's significance lies in the fact that it deepens the research connotation of architecture by introducing locations and time factors as the starting point of relevance research on material and places; It summarizes the application of strategy and method by organizing systematically the relevance between application of contemporary building materials and expression of place, in order to create an atmosphere for place with positive significance and also gives place a certain natural and cultural connotations. Besides, it evaluates and guides contemporary architectural operation form through the application strategy and method, according to the present situation in our country.
