Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, the "Three Dimensional Rural Issues" --agriculture, rural areas and farmers have become a significant topic again in national policy making of China, and special attention has been paid to the development of leisure agriculture and rural tourism, improvement of countryside cultural environment and construction of beautiful living environment. With the boom in rural tourism, more normative, rational and delicate environmental planning and design are required to instruct the development, protection and utilization activities for traditional villages in China. In this background, this paper studies the application of landscape architecture design in the process of traditional village renovation for developing rural tourism, in order to contribute to restructure agricultural industry, enrich farmers, promote economic and social development of rural areas, and accelerate the construction of a new socialist countryside.Traditional village is a vital part of the 5000-year rural culture of China, and it has ultimately important meaning to the Chinese. However, the process of rapid urban sprawl and construction land expansion in China has overtaken enormous native rural habitats at the fringe of urban spaces, destroying thousands of years of history among vernacular landscapes and villages. Natural villages continuously disappeared, and the traditional rural cultural ecology has been destroyed seriously. Gujiayu village in Bailuquan, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province is a typical example of China’s endangered villages. The purpose of this study is to explore a scientific and reasonable design approach to protect the natural and ecological environment of Gujiayu, and in the meantime, to develop a more delicate living environment of the village. A renovation design is proposed via processing, transforming and remodeling the buildings, streets, and landscapes of Gujiayu village. This paper is organized in six chapters. First, the paper describes the current situation of domestic and foreign rural tourism through literature review and field study, the focus of which lies in collecting landscape architecture design cases and collating principles, approaches and features of landscape architecture development. Secondly, by carrying out field studies at Gujiayu, investigation is made towards the planning layout, architectural environment and landscape design of the village. Gujiayu, as a less developed village without tourism history, demonstrates a significant feature of hollowing-out, and obvious existence of environmental issue and landscape disadvantages. To achieve the goal of developing Gujiayu into an attractive rural tourism destination, the paper suggests that it’s necessary to advocate sustainable development and carry out scientific planning in this village. At last, the paper comes up with practical scheme and fundamental strategies for "beautiful countryside" design and construction through the practice of renovation design of the indoor and outdoor environment and landscape planning of Gujiayu village.
