To the ship which is planned to sail in polar waters, the IACS (International Classification Society Association) have unified requirements Polar Class for polar ships. The rules of Polar Class include three parts:Polar Class descriptions and application, the hull structure requirements of Polar Class, the machinery requirements of Polar Class. This article work out the software about the hull structure assessment of Polar Class, according to the IACS unified requirements for Polar Class, principium study the effect of Polar Class to the hull structure of one type bulk carrier, basic familiarity of the design technique about the hull structure of Polar Class. The main research and results of this paper is as follows:The first study is about hull structure requirements of Polar Class, based on the unified requirements of Polar Class by IACS. This study mainly including the polar ice class requirements for hull structure principle and background, etc. Through the study found that the vertical total bending moment when the Polar Class ship navigation in ice area move to the fore part, and the total shear force also move to the fore part. The second studies are work out a facility software about the hull structure assessment of Polar Class, based on the hull structure requirements of Polar Class. This software has realized the following seven functions:Polar Class ship bow and non bow ice load calculation function; profiles library function, can automatically check profile; profiles the actual net effective shear area and net effective plastic section modulus calculation function; Polar Class ship plate check function; main supporting member of ice load calculation and checking the stability function; Polar Class ship longitudinal strength calculation function; Polar Class calculation report output. The last study is principium assessment of the Polar Class effect on the hull structure of one 80000 ton type bulk carrier, by using the software which is mentioned above. It is found that the conventional merchant ships, such as the Polar Class cap, do not take into account the structural optimization design, which directly meets the requirements of the IACS Polar Class cap. For example, for a 80000 ton bulk carrier will lead to an increase in the weight of the hull structure more than ten pencent. It is also verified that the ship can meet the requirements of IA ice level, but in turn, to meet the requirements of the IA ice class PC7 is not meeting the requirements of the PC7 Polar Class level.
