High temperature superconducting(HTS) tapes are suitable to be applied for power transmission and storage, because they have low resistivity and high current density. However, due to the complex structure of the HTS tapes, the conductivity varies from temperature, magnetic field and stress, as the result, the design of the superconducting power device(SPD) is difficult. This paper is dedicated to analyzing the current capacity under different circumstances through a lot of investigation and experiments. On this basis, the selection analysis of HTS tapes in different SPD is performed. The main works are as follows:(1) Investigated the basic structure and production technology of each HTS tape, and analyzed their strengths and weaknesses caused by the structure or technology, such as the production scale, the quality of the superconducting layer, the ferromagnetism of the substrate, the mechanical strength of the stable layer and so on.(2)Summarized the basic types and dimensions of all kinds of tapes,and comparatively analyzed the datasheet of different types, such as the critical current(IC)and critical current density(JC) under self-fields, the allowable tensile strength and the minimum bending diameter. In addition, the IC of each tape and its attenuation at different temperature has been researched.(3)By designing a series of experiment methods and manufacturing a relevant experimental apparatus, some characteristics of HTS tapes have been measured, including the IC anisotropy at 77 K, the IC under tensile stress and bending state, the current recovery after canceling mechanical stress, and the insulation level of the tapes, Thus the properties database of the HTS tapes are formed.(4) Proposed selection scheme of HTS tapes for different SPDs after analyzing their features and operating environment. Through building the solenoid SMES and annular SMES models and accomplishing their electromagnetic analysis and stress analysis, the feasibility of the recommended HTS tapes applied in the SMES has been verified.
