Panel die as the basis equipment for the process of car body productions, is the weak link in the automobile product development, limits the shorten of development cycle of automobile products. Trimming and flanging directly determine the quality of the products. Trimming and flanging insert which has complicated structure and high precision requirement, is difficult to design. In the design process, even experienced designers need to modify the model repeatedly to meet the requirement, that wastes time and effort. If a trimming and flanging die insert automation design system can be realized, the design cycle of automobile panel die will be greatly shorten.Based on the traditional CAD theory, using the parametric technology, knowledge engineering and database technology, this paper studies the automatic design method for auto panel trimming and flanging die insert, realizes the automation design system of insert, which meets the requirements of enterprises, greatly improves the design efficiency of insert, fills the blank of this field in china.This paper fisrt summary the trimming and flanging die insert's structure, using the modular technology, divides the insert structure into four modules: the main insert body, screws&pins, patron and scrap cutter. Then expounds the design essentials of each module. Further, the main insert body is divided into four structures: cutting edge, air knife, flange and scrap cutter. What's more, this paper proposes a design method combining serial and parallel, which standardized the insert design process. This paper also studies the system structure of the auto panel trimming and flanging die insert design system, and gives solutions for some key problems in the design process.This paper summarizes the designers' experience and rules as the knowledge data base, using the UG/OPEN API interface complete the development of the parametric design system of auto panel trimming and flanging die insert on NX platform. Finally, this paper illustrates the parametric design process in detail by means of vivid examples.
