As the increase of high-rise steel frame structure and different requirements of various functions about structural spaces, many structures with complicated shapes have been designed and applied in the real projects. These structures lead to numerous unconventional joints. Beams set on the both sides of the joint or sections between top and bottom column are different obviously so that force transferring mechanisms and deformation features of these unconventional joints are not same as conventional ones. The kind of the joint is defined as special-shaped joint in the project. Recently, special-shaped joints have been used more and more widely in real projects. However, owing to lack of theoretical support and sufficient experiences, the regulations for conventional joints are used to design special-shaped joints. And the design method can guarantee strength requirements of special-shaped joints, but the safety of the structure cannot be ensured. As a result, it is necessary to conduct researches on steel special-shaped joints to investigate the mechanical performance and failure mechanism and to propose proper design methods.The paper presents a new kind of special-shaped joint-the special-shaped joint between column and beam of different heights with exterior reinforcing ring. The advantages of the new special-shaped joint are to save constructional materials, to manufacture conveniently and so forth. In the paper, finite element analysis by using ABAQUS and experiment are combined to investigate the initial rigidity, bearing capacity and seismic performance of the new special-shaped joint.In this paper, the main job:by the experimental method of the seismic performance of the study on the specimens, the focus is on the high beam around different aliens node and the high beam of the same routine seismic performance contrast analysis. In this experiment, selected the round steel pipe and square steel tube column outside strengthen ring shaped two different nodes and the corresponding high beam is the same as regular nodes, a total of seven specimens experiment research; Verify each node specimen under low cycle reciprocating load of seismic performance, stress distribution and failure mode. At the test centre sill height ratio and strengthen the outside ring plate for the node specimen with the change of the main parameters, through the contrast analysis of test results obtained outside the beam height ratio change and seismic performance, the influence of reinforcement ring slabs abnormity node in the seismic performance analysis in the study of the special-shaped node, the node as a whole and the node domain of hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, ductility performance, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation properties; Through the analysis of the above test results for the reasonable evaluation on the seismic performance of special-shaped node and put forward reasonable Suggestions to the structure of the special nodes.On the basis of finite element analysis, seven joints (including special-shaped joints with different beam heights and conventional joints) are manufactured and the experiment is conducted to investigate mechanical performance of the joint under static loading and low cyclic reversed loading. The shear angle-shear force curve, failure mode and ultimate failure load of the joints are studied under static loading. The effect of the ratio of beam heights in both sides of joint on mechanical performance of the joint is investigated and the discussed mechanical performance is mainly including initial rigidity, ultimate rotation and ultimate failure load. Under low cyclic reversed loading, seismic performance of the joint is investigated to analyze hysteretic character, failure mode and deformation of the special-shaped joint. The initial rigidity, ultimate rotation, ultimate failure load, energy dissipation capacity (including ductility and energy dissipation coefficient) and shear deformation in the panel zone under low cyclic reversed loading are studied in the paper.In order to verify accuracy of finite element analysis results, stress-strain relationship curve received in the experiment is used to make finite element analysis on mechanical performance of the special-shaped joint. Based on comparative analysis on finite element analysis results and experimental results, feasibility and accuracy of the finite element analysis are verified. Finally, the experimental results and finite element analysis results are summarized to provide reasonable designing advises for designers and engineers in the projects.
