Intelligent building is generated from the needs of information exchange between inside and outside the building, security, comfort, convenience and energy conservation. Industry of intelligent building and energy conservation emphasizes the user experience, and has inner motive force of development. Building intellectualization has become a development tendency, which enhances efficiency of clients and applicability of building, reduces applied cost. The technology of intelligent building itself is not a single technique, but a combination of control technology, computer technology, information communication technology and others. It serves people with the building as a medium. It emerges along with the generation of control technology, develops along with the development of information technology, and booms along with the popularization of computer technology.The traditional intelligent building includes five sub-systems, which are constituted by many functions. All of them use different protocols and standards, such as the formats of information, interfaces, transmission media, information exchange devices and function systems. Along with the increasing of functional requirements, the number of function systems increase as well, which causes the raising of difficulty of integration of intelligent building systems and the cost of wiring. This consumes large number of wires, cables and exchange devices, which lowers the project revenue and makes the operation maintenance difficult.Moreover, building industry is quite different from others that have long production phases and long service life. The lifetime of building is between 50 and 70 years. In contrast, the electromechanical devices could be used for 10 to 15 years, and there are several information revolutions every 3 to 5 years, along with which the information devices are changed rapidly. Because of the lack of consolidated standards for intelligent building systems and its sub-systems, many devices are expired when they just come into use, which makes the updating, adding and deleting functions and system updating very difficult.Hence, intelligent building needs a consolidated standard which includes formats of information, interfaces, transmission media and information exchange devices. TCP/IP protocol, as the most widely used information communication protocol, has abundant universal interfaces. Besides, sending information through TCP/IP protocol does not depend on any specific hardware or operation system. In terms of data transmission, TCP/IP protocol has an entire data packaging method, which can ensure the data is delivered to the destination accurately, rapidly and effectively.This article introduces the problems exist in the development phase of intelligent building, explains the advantages of using TCP/IP protocol to unify formats of information, interfaces, transmission media, information exchange devices and ways of processing information. It conducts several experiments to study how to use TCP/IP protocol to implement remote control and transform the signals collected by sensors into data package that can be processed through TCP/IP protocol. Moreover, it introduces how to utilize micro-controllers to implement intelligent furnishing's intelligent control unit and build TCP/IP intelligent building systems through network devices.
