Development of urban public transportation can effectively solve the problem of traffic congestion and pollution, which set up bus lanes is a kind of important method. After many cities of the world set up bus lanes, road network traffic capacity and service level are improved. However, most of the existing research on bus lanes has concentrated on analyzing traffic operational improvements and the design of bus stops, but research on exhaust emissions has lacked. In this paper,we study the way of setting of bus lanes, traffic simulation model, the exhaust emission model and the relationship between them, then we set up a quantitative analysis method for the impact of bus lanes on motor vehicle exhaust emissions. This paper combines the VISSIM model and the MOVES model, then taking the South Gate to TV tower of Xi'an as the object of study and using VISSIM micro-simulation models constructed the simulation network.Three different bus lanes were designed for the study including central bus lanes, curbe bus lanes and no bus lanes. We use the VISSIM output data to calculate the distribution of the working conditions and use MOVES to quantify the road network emissions. Finally we analyze the total emissions and compare the emission at different sections or different times. The vehicle emissions are reduced significantly after setting up bus exclusive lanes. However, vehicle emissions are increased during the peak hours or on crossing road.
