Er,Yb:?YGd?2O3 ceramic powder was prepared by the citric acid-gel combustion method using citric acid as the combustion agent and PEG with the molecular weight of 10000 as the dispersant.The results show that the optimum conditions for ceramic powders: the mole fraction of Gd3+ was 30%,the mole fraction of Er3+ was 4%,the mole fraction of Yb3+ was 5%,the pH was 8 and the calcination temperature was 1000?.The Er,Yb:?YGd?2O3 transparent ceramic was prepared by cold isostatic pressing and vacuum sinteringmethod.The results show that the optimum technological conditions for ceramic: sintering temperature is 1750?,holding-time is 20 h,at 1400 ?annealing treatment under air atmosphere,annealing time is 20 h.The average transmittance of the ceramic sample is about 70% in the visible range and 65% in the near infrared region.The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction.The XRD patterns of the samples are consistent with the standard card JCPDS#?65-3178?of Y2O3,suggesting that the sample still remains cubic phase.Through analyzing the scanning electron microscopy,the average particle of nano-powder is about 55 nm.The up-conversion spectra of the sampleshas been tested.The results prove thatthe emergence of green light and red light are located at 562 nm and658nm,which are corresponding to 4S3/2/2H11/2?4I15/2 and 4F9/2?4I15/2 transition of Er3+,respectively.Under the excitation of 980 nm pump light,the emission intensity of green light and red light depend on the lifetime of 4I11/2 energy level of Er3+ and the aggregation of the number of particles on 4I11/2,4I13/2 energy level of Er3+.
