Due to its unique geographical position,Xinjiang has for centuries been an impor tant cultural and economic crossroads on the ancient Silk Road.For this reason,Xinji ang has not only developed a distinct multicultural atmosphere,but has also been left with an enviably rich cultural heritage.Xinjiang is home to a large number of ethnic minorities,the biggest of which,in terms of population,are the Uyghur.Uyghurs hav e a long-reaching history and a diverse cultural legacy,which is clearly reflected in th eir unique ethnic costumes and traditional clothing.To date,many scholars have cond ucted research into Uyghur cultural achievements and analysed how these achievemen ts have affected the country as a whole.A wealth of research is therefore available on topics such as history,religion and language and culture.However,at present there is a significant lack of research into Uyghur costume,especially into how it has develop ed and changed over time and the effect Uyghur costume has on the stage.Over recen t decades,Xinjiang’s economy has seen a rapid development and globalisation.There has also been a significant improvement in both the standard of education and develop ment of local culture,bringing about an inevitable change in Uyghur ethnic costume.This paper shall conduct an in-depth investigation into Uyghur ethnic costume,basing its findings not only on previous research,but also on the use of a variety of research methodologies,including the "Literature Review Method",the "On-the-Spot Investiga tion Method" and the "Expert Interview Method".Through on-the-spot Investigations and interviews with experts and scholars,the author has gained a deeper understandin g into the development of Uyghur costume,the factors which have instigated its chan ge and the impact it has on the stage.The first part of this paper consists of the introdu ction,which not only introduces the background and significance of research,but also provides an update on the current state of related research both in and out of China an d discusses the difficulty of the task at hand.
