The relation of man and nature is a fundamental problem facing human beings during the process of their survival and development on the earth, and this issue will remain all along,as long as the survival of human being as a species depends upon the earth's environment. In this very sense, mankind's survival and development is a process of changes in the relation of man and nature. As is known to us,the evolution of mankind in earth's physical environment has been undergoing a variety of changes in this very relation, and in sum, there had not been earthshaking change in this relation until human beings actualized in the nineteenth century the first industrial revolution, prior to which, human beings, like all other animals, were subject to earth's natural power, able to show no dominant power toward nature at all. Thus, the process of mankind's survival and development was on a whole restricted to that of a species',and the damaging impact of mankind upon nature was just local. However, after the first industrial revolution, the contrast between human power and natural power has been reversed, and increasingly, human beings have been exhibiting stronger power, with human activities and their consequences deeply integrated into earth's physical environment. From the first industrial revolution onwards, human beings have changed the earth's outlook thoroughly. It is worth noting that the consequences of this change have not only harmed the rhythm and order of nature's functioning, but also driven mankind's survival and development into increasingly serious global environmental crisis. With the rise of modern environmental movement in the 1960 s,human beings have begun to reflect their relation with nature from various perspectives, and tried to find a way leading to harmonious coexistence and development of man and nature. This thesis is intended to be an ecocycle-based study of how man and nature could coexist and devolop in harmony and the corresponding tactics which should be adopted. From the ecological point of view, earth's physical environment is an organic, open and complex ecosystem. An ecosystem consists of living organisms and the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system. These biotic and abiotic components are regarded as linked together through matter cycle and energy flow. All living organisms participate this very cycle and flow, during the process of which, they occupy their econiche and exhibit their special way of life respectively. As long as matter cycle and energy flow continue,an ecosystem will evolve over time in its own way and rhythm. Therefore, matter cycle and energy flow are the base and key to the existence of all living organisms as well as ecosystems.Mankind is just a species in ecosystem, and like all other living organims, occupies their particular econiche. As a species, mankind gets the material basis of their survival and thrival via matter cycle and energy flow. From the axiological point of view, the evolution of man and that of nature are highly interdependent. This high interdependence can be analysed as follows: on the one hand, the survival and thrival of human beings as a species heavily depend upon the continuous and healthy existence and development of earth's natural ecosystem. No matter how human beings evolve, never could they live without the matter and energy supplied by an ecosystem. Thus, natural ecosystem is the matter source of human life.Mankind cannot live without natural ecosystem, and this is the most basic relation between man and nature. On the other hand, the continuous and healthy existence and development of natural ecosystem,in turn, highly depend on mankind's actual condition of development.Due to their evolution, human beings have obtained capacities much stronger than that of all other species',which not only subject other living organisms to our control, but also bring about to natural ecosystem substantive changes which can be seen in the following facts: mankind breaks the constraint of their econiche and influences other living organisms' econiche, and then changes their survival;meanwhile, the very capacities of mankind can also influence the functioning and order of natural ecosystem, which change with human activities. It is in this sense that the health and sustainability of earth's natural ecosystem are heavily dependent on human activities, especially current large-scale industrial activities. The truth is that large-scale human activities in natural ecosystem have severely harmed the survival and development of nature and all the other living organisms therein. Therefore, the harmonious development and interdependence between man and nature are more dependent upon human activities and their consequences.Nowadays, this is a basic relation of which we need to be fully aware. For this reason, social development and uses of natural resources should be regulated by the idea of scientific development, and ecological dimension is one of the concrete scientific dimensions of scientific development.Last but not the least, some practical suggestions are made concerning how to achieve the harmonious and healthy development of man-nature relation.
