| Burning with firewood is a firing way which uses wood as fuel and fires ceramic body in a particular kiln body with specific heating up curve. It is not only modern potters’ attitude towards earth, but also an artist’s way of life. This paper compared the similarities and differences of the ancient dragon kiln, Steamed bun kiln, gourd kiln, the town of kiln and the modern wood kiln, also it did a series of research on new refractory materials and got a result that new refractory materials have promoted the development of the wood kiln. 1. According to the practical situation, we can design the kiln body’s volume, type and size, also these related design will affect the kiln’s firing temperature, atmosphere, ashes’ number and falling position, heating rate and other factors. 2. Modern wood kiln can reflect the specific effect of firewood and produce abundant fambe texture, which is convenient for artists to engage in experimental study of fambe effect as well as to make the work produce light surface texture, matte surface texture, bark rind texture, skin texture, scorched texture, erosion texture and cracking texture and so on, and to pursue a better meaningful form of works. 3. The applying of new refractory materials in modern wood kiln makes the kiln’s whole construction process convenient.
