Chewing lice belongs to Phthiraptera. It is tiny in body size and hard in integument, wingless. However, they are well evolved with capacity to crawl within feather. Most species are parasitic in the body surface of birds and poultry, and few in mammal.Chewing lice can feed on the dander, scale and secretion of their host animal skin such that affect their growth and development,or spread poultry diseases causing great losses to poultry production. The present thesis mainly studied on the chewing lice in southwest of China by using the method of the traditional and molecular taxonomy.Statistical analysis on the host birds were also carried out. This thesis reviews the research progress of domestic and overseas chewing lice, which it is very important for us to know about chewing lice. The main results of this paper are the follows:1.TaxonomyIn the taxonomic section, the thesis sout out 3 families,14 genera,30 species in total.Among them, including 14 new species,3 new record species,13 known species.New species: Ricinus muttui sp.nov.,Pseudomenopon qujingensis sp.nov.,Menacanthus burkii sp.nov.,Myrsidea sinensis sp.nov.,Myrsidea fuliginosa sp.nov.,Mysidea pilosus sp.nov.,Brueelia ruficeps sp.nov.,Brueelia sannio sp.nov.,Coloceras beinese sp.nov.,Columbicola livia sp.nov.,Lipeures simicaponis sp.nov.,Philopteroides semitorques sp.nov.,Philopterus wolongensis sp.nov.,Philopterus erythaca sp.nov..New specific records: Bonomiella afra Tendeiro,1980,Goniocotes clayae Tendeiro,1954,Philopterus reginae Mey,1982.Known species: Ricinus fringille De Geer,1778,Colpocephalum turbinatum Denny,1842,Menacanthus eurysternus(Burm,1838),Menacanthus stubbei Mey,1982,Menopon gallinae(Linnaeus,1758),Myrsidea monilegeri Tandan,1972,Brueelia pseudopicturata Cicchino,1986,Brueelia infuscate Cicchino,1979,Coloceras chinense(Kellogg & Chapman,1902),Columbicola fulmeki Eichler,1942,Lipeurus caponis(Linnaeus,1758),Philopterus turdi(Denny,1842),Philopterus erythrini(Mey,1982).2.DNA barcodeSeven species of chewing lice DNA barcodes were obtained. The phylogenetic analysis shows that species of the same genus are clustered into a branch.Amblycera,Ischnocera, and Anoplura were clustered into a branch, and they are paraphyletic group, and it was consistent with the results of the previous studies. Therefore,DNA barcode technology used to identify the feather louse species is feasible.3.Host statisticsThe birds were collected from southwest of China.Among them,28 birds from Sichuan Province,49 birds from Chongqing City,20 birds from Guizhou Province, the rest of the specimens from Yunnan and Tibet. The total 108 birds belong to 7 orders,19 families,44 species.66% of birds specimens are from Passeriformes,8% from Galliformes,7% from Columbiformes, and 15 species of birds are unidentified.Among the 108 birds,71 birds were infested with chewing lice, and the infection rate was 65.7%.The chewing lice of Philopterus infected 10 species of birds, and these birds were all belong to Passeriformes. The chewing lice of Coloceras infect 9 species of birds, and the 9 birds belong to three orders: Columbiformes,Charadriiformes and Coraciiformes.
