Chaos theory is an important branch of nonlinear science, which is widely used in researching economics, meteorology, water science etc. In geology, because the geological processes are long-term and multi-period, the variety of the ore-forming element concentrations, determined by the geodynamic genesis of metallogenic system, was of strongly random and chaos features. Identifying the characteristics of of ore-forming elements is significant for the better understanding the ore-forming process and mineral prospecting. In this paper, firstly we introduce the related theoretical knowledge of phase space reconstruction technology; secondly, taking logistic mapping as an example to study the influence of data size and norm on calculating the correlation dimension, and put forward a method that is based on approximate entropy to calculate the embedding dimension; finally, applying the phase space reconstruction analyze the chaotic character of element Au gathering in Jiaodong Dayingezhuang. The main results of this paper are as follows:(1) Analyzing the influence of the different norm on the estimation of the correlation dimension in G-P algorithm. When using L1 norm to calculate the correlation dimension, the results are instable, when applying L2 norm and infinite norm to calculate the correlation dimension, the results are relative well, and the results of infinite norm are smaller and more stable.(2) A method which is based on approximate entropy is provided to estimate the embedding dimension. The method is simple calculation, short running time, and little effect by data length.(3) Using the phase space reconstruction technology to identify the chaotic characteristics of Au in Shandong Dayingezhuang. The results indicate that the content sequence of element Au in strongly mineralized drill cores have stronger chaotic characteristic, and the chaotic feature of Au in moderately and weakly mineralized is not significant.
