Research On The Effect Of International Technology Spillover Channel On Technological Innovation

Since the 1980s, with the accelerating development of Chinese enterprise internationalization process, the domestic "going out" strategy is getting more and more attention, many companies began to adopt internationalization strategy. Technological innovation is not only an important power of social economic development, but also an important symbol of a nation’s development and progress. In the process of the development of China’s increasing internationalization, technology spillover provides a new source of the China’s technological innovation. Although there are many sources of technology innovation, domestic scholars are paying more and more attention to the way of technology spillover. Most of the current study suggests there are three kinds of international technology spillover, namely, international trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) and Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI).The technology spillover can also be subdivided in three ways. The international trade can be subdivided into import trade and export trade, foreign direct investment can be subdivided into Transnational mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and Greenfield investment, etc. The influence of technology innovation on the ways of technology spillover is very different. Therefore, studying the influence of international technology spillover channels on technical innovation has become a mutual interest in theoretical and enterprise management.This main idea in the paper is as follows. Firstly, the related articles about technology innovation and international technology spillover of three kinds of channels are collected. Then the related theories in the influence of technology spillovers on the technological innovation are organized for the subsequent theoretical research in this paper. This paper studies the influence on the technology innovation by the empirical analysis method, which the national data is from 1995 to 2014, with R&D funds and R&D personnel input as control variable, three channels of technology spillover including the research of foreign trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign direct investment (OFDI), and the patent grant as technology innovation. The paper also studies the further ways such as import and export, cross-border M&A and Greenfield investment to the impact of technology innovation. The results show that the overall international trade is no significant positive for invention patents, patent for utility model patents and appearance design is negative and significant, and import and export of patents were not significant, which imports except for a patent for invention as positive, the other are negative, export except for patent of appearance design is positive, the other is negative. The influence of FDI on the patent of appearance design is positive but not significant, the invention patent and the patent for utility model and the influence of the total patent is no significant negative. OFDI on different patent is positive, but not significantly. The transnational mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and Greenfield investment have little effect on the patent coefficients.M&A is a negative significant to utility model patents, but not significant in other, Greenfield investment is negative for all patents, but not significant.Through the empirical research, the paper may get the following conclusions:(1) The international trade has different influence on the different aspects of technology innovation including promoting and hindering the technology innovation, which is still an important channel of technology spillovers. (2) The FDI hinders the development of technology innovation in our country, but the influence on technology innovation is not significant. (3) The influence of OFDI on technology innovation is relatively small, cross-border M&A has different influence on different aspects of technological innovation, but relative to the transnational merger and acquisition, Greenfield investment is more advantageous to their own technological innovation. We put forward the following Suggestions:(1) strengthen the import and export trade, and research the influence of import and export trade on different aspects of technology innovation, so as to effectively promote the technological innovation in our country. (2) Strengthen the foreign direct investment.At the same time, we need to understand the field of foreign direct investment at same times, even limit the relevant industry to prevent a foreign direct investment curbing technology innovation.(3) At present, China’s OFDI is developing constantly, we need to pay more attention to OFDI investment, and prefer to transnational mergers and acquisitions.
