Rural land circulation promotes the transition from traditional agriculture to modern intensive agriculture. It is an important approach to scale-up, mechanize, modernize and standardize agriculture. At present, China is experiencing increased rural land circulation. The process is gradually being rationalized, standardized and more organized. However, various factors are restraining the rural land circulation process. In Jilin province, the differences in natural geographic conditions led to regional differences in the process. Exploring the mechanisms behind those influencing factors is important to the scientific and rational rural land circulation in the province. This study was conducted based on field survey data from several regions of Jilin province. Combining comparative analysis, statistical analysis, normative analysis and empirical analysis, we aimed to reveal the patterns and differences residing in the rural land circulation in those regions. The results are as follows:During 2004 to 2014, the per capita land circulation area increased by three times. The regions involved in the circulation expanded, the entities of the process were more diverse, and the forms of circulation became various. In the eastern mountainous area, the land circulation is more marketized comparing with the middle and western plains. In the eastern mountain area, the land circulation is mostly in the form of short-term leasing, whereas in the middle and western plains, the land circulation is mostly in the form of short- to medium-term subcontracting.Farmers’ willingness to circulate land is mainly decided by the economic benefits from the land. The survey shows that more than 3/4 of the farmers are willing to circulate land. The number of farmers willing to receiving land is 2.4 times of those willing to giving. One fifth of the respondents are reluctant to circulate land. The primary factors influencing farmers’ willingness to circulate land are local economic development, household characters, government policies and social welfare. Economic benefits, land circulation costs, and workers in the household are some key factors. Some other factors, including the receiver of land, the circulation mode, the planned use, and the circulation regulations, also have certain influence on farmers’ willingness in participating in land circulation.Using Logistic regression model, the driving forces influencing the land circulation of western, middle and eastern areas of Jilin province were analyzed. The analysis showed that educational background and social welfare are the main factors influencing the land circulation. In the middle and western plains, planting cost and social welfare play more important roles, whereas in the eastern mountainous area, farmers’ age, educational background and government policies are more important factors.
