With the continuous development of information technology, information systems, penetrating into every aspect of life, have a significant impact on the mode of research management in the universities and research institutes. In modern times, the university scientific research cycle becomes longer, its complexity increases, its projects grow, its type continuously enriched, and its management also becomes more complex. Thus, the management pattern of manual statistics, applying and reporting in the past cannot meet requirements of the present research work, and it is required that universities with its own characteristics, have the targeted propagation of research management information system to improve its efficiency and the utilization of funds for scientific researches. Due to the increasing of the complexity of the scientific research management information systems and its rising investment, the factors such as technology, management, organization, and many other ones make the adoption processes of research information systems to be extremely complex and difficult, in which the main issues is human-computer interaction. And researchers’ understanding, acceptation and adoption of research system by researchers are critical to its implementation. Therefore, in order to solve adoption problems of research systems, we proposed an adoption model of research management information system based on cognitive load by analyzing characteristics of scientific research management information system, types and characteristics of its users, combining with factors influencing the adoption of information system and its general adoption model, and introducing the phased-implementation strategy and cognitive load theory. By referring to the achievement from domestic and foreign researches on cognitive load and system adoption, variables in the model and questionnaire surveys were designed, measured and verified by interviewing researchers in university labs to obtain statistical data. The quality of the dada was analyzed with software SPSS, and the model was analyzed and modified within structural equation models by using software AMOS. The results show that information systems for scientific research management implementing in phases can directly improve the effect of training and communication, effectively reduce the cognitive load, and lead to a positive performance. This study verifies the values of the application of cognitive load theory, which is, to some extent, to make guidance for the implementation of research management system.
