In the regional economic integration today, the regional cooperation and division of labor has become an inevitable situation of the current economic development. At the regional of Municipal and county level within the unit to carry out a wide range of two city integration and cooperation form. With the acceleration of the integration process of two cites, as a result of the location superiority and the policy of the government, the rural settlements in the region surrounding the two cities occur the obvious spatial evolution. This paper mainly studies the spatial evolution characteristics of rural settlements under the background of the integration of two cities. This paper selects the core area of Zhengzhou-Kaifeng integration, namely, to the 4 km buffer as the center of Zhengkai Avenue’s axis. This paper comprehensively uses the theory and method of geography, ecology and landscape, to construct and explain the theoretical framework of the spacial evolution of rural settlements under the background of the integration of two cities. Taking Arc GIS10.0 and Fragstats4.0 as the main instruments, with the satellite map in 2003, 2007, 2012 as the data source, this paper analyzes the evolution characteristics of the rural settlements in the aspects of the spatial distribution, settlement pattern and spatial scale. On this basis, this paper also analyzes its influencing factors. Careful analysis yielded the following conclusions:(1) Spatial variation characteristics of rural settlements mainly shows that space discrete distribution, plaque morphology gradually rules, and land use scale significant characteristics. And it has obvious regional difference. From the two ends to the middle of the study region, the stage of development of rural settlements are final stage, transition stage and the initial stage, respectively. With regard to the spatial distribution, rural settlements shows "West is dense and East is sparse", strengthen the characteristics of the evolution of the discrete. In the middle part of the study area, the rural settlements is intensive, and the rural settlements near the city, is more sparse. The high value of the kernel density mainly distributes in the Dameng town. The plaque morphology, the boundary shape of the rural settlement gradually rules, and it also reduce the degree of the fragmentation, enhance the connectivity and stability. The overall connectivity of rural settlements is lower than the towns, and the development of rural settlements restricted by administrative boundaries. Its limitation is in the area of the administrative units.(2) In terms of land size, the number of the rural settlements gradually reduced, and plaque density also decreased, however, the total area are obviously increased, and the scale of the rural settlement land use is extended obviously in the whole study area. That was because of the expansion of existing settlements, not because of relying on the new settlements. Expansion of the study area is gradually concentrated in the central region of the study area, and the scale of the land use stable development. Different rural settlement has different space scale growth direction, and main way to toward the direction of the city and the traffic trunk line direction.Rural settlement is the result of the combined effects of multiple factors. Different factors from different angles affect the change of the rural settlement’s size, shape and its spatial distribution in different degrees. In the aspect of traffic trunk, it as an external force, has a strong influence on the spatial variation of the rural settlements. Then the more rural settlement close to the traffic lines, the more rapid expansion of the rural settlements, and the more changes of the spatial structure. But the traffic trunk line also has a obvious distance attenuation effects, and its space effects is also has a smaller scale. In the land prices factors, Zhengzhou and Kaifeng, as two core cities in the integration of two cities, has a significantly higher land prices compared with other regions. That is to say, the closer the area from the city, the higher the land prices has. Higher premium villages, use the land with a high degree of intensification, then the rural settlements change into the urban settlements. Low land price villages maintain the traditional state of the villages because of the land with a low degree of intensification. Consequently, the distances from the city lead to a different evolutionary stages of the rural settlements. In the government factors, policy system is the external environment and the control force of the evolution of rural settlement, and it is an extremely important factor to influence the development of rural settlements and its spatial evolution.
