The Research Of Listed Shipping Companies Relative Efficiency Between Chinese And Overseas

After recent decades of development, the overall level of shipping industry in China has improved and has become the important participant in world’s maritime trading. Shipping industry is sensitive to changes in the external environment. Since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, the global shipping market has been in a downturn. The above suggests that most of the shipping companies have shortcomings in operating mode and development strategy. Therefore it is very important to evaluate the management efficiency of the shipping companies. The purpose of this paper is to measure the relatively efficiency for Chinese and foreign shipping companies and to put forward the suggestions improving the efficiency of Chinese shipping companies.Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been in a wide application in the research of efficiency. However the traditional DEA method has some inevitable disadvantages. This paper mainly uses the improved DEA method, which can improve the accuracy of the calculation and analysis. This paper select 8 shipping companies which is listed on China stock market, and 14 shipping companies which is listed on foreign stock market, based on the data from 2005 to 2014. The inputs include fixed assets, total assets, number of employees, operating cost, and operating revenue is output in DEA model. Through researching the empirical results find that domestic shipping listed companies have lower relative efficiency in comparison with the foreign shipping listed companies. And since 2008, the gap between the two is more obvious. That is, China shipping listed companies need further ascension in the asset utilization, personnel management, cost control and so on.Finally, the paper put forward eight pieces of suggestion on how to improve relatively efficiency of domestic shipping companies.
