The Determinants Of Chinese Investments In Cote D’ivoire

OECD defines FDI as cross-border investment by a resident entity in one economy with the objective of obtaining a lasting interest in an enterprise resident in another economy.Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a key element in international economic integration. FDI creates direct, stable and long-lasting links between economies. It encourages the transfer of technology and know-how between countries, and allows the host economy to promote its products more widely in international markets.This study examines the determinants and policies for attracting Chinese FDI to Cote d’Ivoire. The research was conducted by eight questionnaires designed for Chinese respondents. A total of25responses were received.By considering the response and statistics analyze, the result show different mechanisms that play an important roles in attracting Chinese FDI; there are:market size, economic growth, and employment, degree of trade openness and trade policy of the recipient country. This factors show a positive results to attract Chinese investor. Chinese respondents seem to be somewhat optimistic about the investment environment in Cote d’Ivoire but they believe in Cote d’Ivoire’s economic potential and its wealth. The study also reveals some positive reasons and obstacles of Chinese FDI in Cote d’Ivoire.In addition, the difficulty of access to information (language barriers) for Chinese investors who mostly do not speak French and more less English. Information’s found are not updated. Finally, the study concludes that Cote d’Ivoire is still less unknown by Chinese investor hence the need to promote it in China. The promotion of Cote d’Ivoire in China is highly recommended for to attract more Chinese firms to this country so desperately needs to revive its economy.
