With the development of the national economy, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have grown up in our country. SMEs play an increasingly important role in the economic arena. They play an absolute advantage whether they are in the provision of the final product or paid taxes and provide jobs or other aspects. For the less developed western region, SMEs also play an important role, especially those traditional manufacturing SMEs. They not only provide a lot of jobs but also promote the urbanization process.Traditional SMEs are faced with a lot of unfavorable factors, such as financing difficulties, lack of talent, harsh conditions of market access and so on. But they also have opportunity, such as the integration of global economy, the western development policy, the country’s industrial transformation and upgrading, transformation of industry. How to seize the opportunity and how to choose their own way to grow is a question of the growth of SMEs in the region.This article analyze the current situation of SMEs’development in our country and in less developed western region from contributions to economy, promotion to employment, increasing number and other aspects. In addition, the article also analyzes the plights of SMEs in less developed western region. Through the analysis we find it is important to select proper way of growth for SMEs in less developed western region. Based on the existing domestic and foreign research on the growth of business, this paper summarizes the internal and external factors affecting the growth of SMEs. We summarize several ways of growth of SMEs in less developed western region. Then we describe how to use AHP to choose their way of growth. Finally, an example of one company is used to verify.
