In this paper, based on this, the DEA- Malmquist index method of the equipment manufacturing industry divisions in the western area of total factor productivity and technological progress contribution rate to the measure, the result shows that there are many similarities, seven divisions such as average annual total factor productivity is above 1, but from every year, the total factor productivity between industries still exists bigger difference; Fabricated metal products, general machinery manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing industry and technology progress contribution rate is under 50% level between, make this a few industry still belongs to extensive economic growth mode; Special machinery manufacturing, electronics and communications equipment manufacturing, electric machinery and equipment manufacturing, instrumentation and cultural office machinery manufacturing technology progress contribution rate above 50% of the boundary, belongs to intensive economic growth mode. Although at the beginning of the 21 st century so far more thana dozen years, most of the equipment manufacturing industry of western region sub industries change the economic growth mode, rely on technological progress, a positive transformation of the mode of economic growth, but also need to be aware that China is still a great power, power rather than manufacturing.
