Magnesite is an important strategic mineral resources in country’s economic development, it is also the primary raw materials of magnesia and refractory. China has rich and unique magnesite resource. Whether it is the amount or the quality of magnesite of China are the best of the world, China also with reserves of highly concentrated, high quality, and other characteristics of the ore. China magnesite is mostly in Liaoning Province and Shandong Province, Liaoning Province has more than 80% of the amount of magnesite of China. The paper analyses and forecasts the demand of future demand for magnesite in the method of sector demand analysis. Through the analysis of consumption of steel and cement and other downstream sectors, it shows the current demand of magnesite has entered a peak period, in the period, China’s total demand of magnesite is about 22 million tons, after a period of high demand, it will slowly decline, and the amount of demand around 2025 will sank to 21 million tons, and 19 million tons in 2030.According to the result of demand forecasts, in the future the proportion of magnesite in steel sector will continue to decline, and with the development of future high-tech fields, defense industry and other fields, metal magnesium as an important raw material in the downstream of magnesite, its proportion will rise in the consumer sector, it is the sector of great potential in future consumption. On the supply side, Liaoning Province, with its natural resources and industrial base, it will still be the Chinese magnesite supply center in the future. In addition, the predicted magnesite resource amount in Xinjiang is 1.36 billion tons, which ranked second in China. With the increase of geological work in the west area, Xinjiang will become the reserve base of magnesite resource of China in the future. Magnesite resource has huge potential in China. In this thesis, magnesite industry is defined as both include magnesite resources development industry and the subordinated industry of magnesia and refractory. All of these industries in China are at the first place in the world in output, consumption and exports. While Japan, South Korea, the United States, India and other countries are the main export countries of magnesite, magnesia and refractory.AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) is used in the thesis to make an assessment of the key areas of magnesite industry in China. In the competitiveness rankings of magnesite industry, Liaoning, Shandong and Xinjiang ranked the first three, followed in the rankings by Henan, Hebei and Xizang. As a result, specific advice is given, that Liaoning as the raw material supply base, Shandong and Henan to be the deep processing base, and Xinjiang and Xizang the strategic reserve base. Many issues are still remain in China magnesite industry, such as production pollution, imperfect policies and regulations, a foreign anti-dumping investigation and excess capacity. All of these issues interact and influence with each other. Therefore, it is an inevitable choice for sustainable and healthy development of magnesite industry in China to improve policies and regulations, strengthen the regulation and enforcement, enhance the technological level and adjust the industrial layout.
