The dissemination and development of Yunnan Tibetan Buddhism and its temple economy had been appeared almost simultaneously. With the change of regime, the different sects of Tibetan Buddhism presented different trends of development under the support of different forces. During the Qing dynasty, because of the Qing government’s need for the rule of the Tibetan areas in Yunan, Gelugpa spread upward, while Yunnan’s largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery-the establishment of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery had laid a solid foundation for the future development of the Gelug Sect. This paper describes the development and evolution of Sumtseling Monastery by following its chronological order. By setting the time of democratic reform as an important time node, the paper explores the development of Sumtseling Monastery’temple economy during different periods and its impact on social development. By studying Sumtseling Monastery’s organization and management, economic systems, sources of income and distribution methods, this paper is trying to ascertain development characteristics of Sumtseling Monastery’ temple economy during different periods; after democratic reforms, especially after opening up, Sumtseling Monastery promptly adjusted its mehods of economic management, and vigorously developed tourism economy, which not only won their own economic development, but also promoted the economic development of the surrounding area, thus becoming Yunnan Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture’s ethnic economic development modle with typical religious characteristics. Finally, the author did a simple analysis of characteristics of new temple economy and its positive and negative impacts, the paper tries to take a near look at evolution trends of the new temple economy, with the hope of Sumtseling Monastery’ positive adaptation to the development of society, which could set a good example for the development of local community and ethnic economy, resulting in a more positive impact.
