The Urban Rail Transit as a timely, convenient, safe and comfortable mode of transport which could effectively solve the problem of urban traffic congestion. However, the continuous growth of economy that more and more people moved into the center of the urban area, the demand for transport gradually increased. Due to resident allocation, passenger flow always concentrated on the center area and creates "morning and evening tides" phenomenon. In general, the traditional railway’s end-to-end operation is hardly to satisfy the demand during the peak periods, train capacity is insufficient in the urban area but exceed in the suburban area.A research being taken on Shenzhen Metro L line as an example, first, it introduces the Shenzhen Metro line network and the L line. Second, elaborates the L line’s initial setup by end-to-end operation mode. Then analyzes the problem incurred at that time such as congestion and insufficient transport capacity. By using a fishbone diagram method to analysis the problem thoroughly and identified the main problem. Followed by the passenger survey and research results with the initial forecast passenger data have been compared and analyzed. Finally, it suggested to combine the long&short routing operation methods on the L line. Service review has also been conducted after adopting the new methods. The long&short routing operation can fully utilize limited resources. It helps to reduce transportation costs as well as increase carrying capacity during peak hours. This study has suggested further optimization method to the short routing operation and strengthen the short routing function. According to passenger distribution along the line, services are fine tuned in different period to cope with the morning and evening tides. During the morning and evening peak hours, different headways of the short loop trains are put into operation. The result of this study provides a good sample on combining long&short routing operation on different periods for reference. It can be promoted to other domestic lines and further to other cities of the country. To achieve the service requirements, the service provider have to play more efforts on monitoring and keep improving.
