As the inexhaustible driving source and power, innovation plays a more and moreimportant role in enterprise’s survival and development. It is known that the basis ofinnovation is resources. So for better innovation performance and sustainablecompetitive advantages, enterprises should be engaged actively in absorption andaccumulation to improve the storage of resources. There are two ways to get resources, one is internal creation, and the other is external acquisition. With the continuousdevelopment of economic globalization and the increasingly fierce competitiveenvironment, market environment has under gone tremendous changes. Enterprisesneed pay more attention to external acquisition because of the finite resources anddependency problem, which are an opportunity as well as a challenge for enterprises. How to adjust alliance strategy from the corporate strategy level to cope with thecomplex competition environment has become a major strategy problem facing byenterprises. Alliance among enterprises under supply chain background as an importantway of obtaining external resources has attracted more and more attention. So the paperdiscusses the effect mechanism of longitudinal alliance behavior on technologicalinnovation model based on the background of supply chain. At the same time, the paperis a part of the Doctoral Program of Higher School Specialized Research Funded projectnamed “Based on supply chain collaboration and relational research between alliancemode and innovation type”(Grant No.:20110191110031).According to technological innovation and resource dependence related theories, the paper develops by focusing on the topic of “How enterprises in supply chain buildcompetitive advantages through longitudinal alliance cooperation”. Based on the studyof literature and drawing lessons from research of strategic alliance and innovationmechanism, the paper builds a basic model of “Longitudinal Alliance Behavior-External Involvement-Technological Innovation”. By organically combined qualitativeand quantitative analysis such as theory research, interviews, large sample researchstatistics and used mathematical statistics tools such as SPSS and AMOS, the paperempirically tests the theoretical hypotheses. Through reviewing literature, buildingconceptual model, proposing theoretical assumptions and empirical analysis process, thepaper answers questions step by step about what influence is alliance behavior in supplychain on technological innovation and how, then gets the following conclusions: (1) Technology alliance among enterprises in supply chain upstream anddownstream is beneficial to implementing supplier involvement, thus strengthening thecreation of technological resources. Longitudinal marketing alliance among enterprisesis conducive to customer involvement, thus strengthening the creation of marketresources, not supplier involvement.(2) Because supplier involvement in technologicalinnovation process can bring more technological advantages, enterprises involvingsupplier participation are more likely to implement radical innovation. Enterprisesinvolving customer in technological innovation process, which can bring more marketadvantages and have higher expectations, are inclined to make incremental innovationand radical innovation.(3) Based on rational pursuit of resources utility maximizing, technological resources provided by longitudinal technology alliance are helpful toimplement radical innovation, while market resources provided by marketing allianceare associated with incremental innovation.(4) Resource dependence influences theeffect of external participation on technological innovation mode. When resourcedependence is low, enterprises involving supplier in technological innovation processare conducive to make radical innovation, not incremental innovation. When resourcedependence is high, to prevent opportunistic behavior and reduce risk, enterprises aremore likely to make incremental innovation. However, regardless of resourcedependence high or low, enterprises involving customer participation are likely to carryout incremental innovation. To a certain extent, this paper makes contributions to the improvement of theresearch system of longitudinal supply chain alliance and technological innovation, andprovides some theoretical reference for the future study in this area. Furthermore, findings of this paper are beneficial for the spreading of supply chain alliance strategyin business, besides, offering reference and guidance about how to reap competitiveadvantages through supply chain alliance and better participation in domestic andinternational competition.
