With the rapid development of electronic information technology, it’s overwhelming for people to explore and develop the unknown field. The image information is first-hand available at the present stage, which is the most intuitionistic data, meanwhile there has a higher request for the amount of information contained in images. Therefore, the infrared and CCD image registration research has become a hotspot in image processing. But infrared image and CCD image belong to different modes, have different advantages or disadvantages. The infrared image reflects the radiation distribution in target scene, it has a high contrast but the details of resolution is weak. While the CCD image has a high resolution and good details, but its level is not clear, and will be easily affected by external factors.Given this background, this paper compared the three basic registration effects for the target video in the early research of algorithm, and adopted the method based on gray level information, also has made an improvement: Combining information entropy, mutual information and cross-correlation matrix, the block processing is carried out on a frame of image so as to get the largest information block for matching. Finally through the mutual information measure, the best matching parameters will be obtained. This method can effectively overcome the defects of existing algorithm in real time, and gets a better registration effect.Late mainly to the system research which is based on FPGA and aims at the registration of infrared and CCD image, this paper designs a hardware registration system with FPGA as the core. This system integrates development board DE2-115 and camera TRDB_D5M, which all belongs to the Altera. According to the subject demand, it bases on the software platforms such as Quartus Ⅱ, Nios Ⅱ IDE, Modelsim, designes a SDRAM memory control module, realizes the registration algorithm in the embedded IP soft core of Nios Ⅱ, and finally it sends the data which have been processed for VGA to display. The system debugging shows that registration can be realized based on FPGA, and also has a good effect.
