Nowadays, with the continuous improvement of the Smart Mobile Terminal and the flat-p anel screen, the cruising ability of the Smart Mobile Terminal attract more and more attention. Portable Power has been an important accessory of smart mobile terminal, in which the screen consumes most of the power. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the power consumption of the flat-panel screen displays system. To overcome the above problem, an algorithm is proposed in this paper to drastically reduce the power consumption of the TFT-LCD and the OLED, which are the mainstream of flat-panel screen. This paper mainly studies on the difficulties in the displaying image with lower power consumption on TFT-LCD and OLED, which are which are the mainstream of flat-panel screen.First of all, the display theory and power consumption model of TFT-LCD are analyzed. According to the power consumption model of TFT-LCD, the reduction of power consumption in TFT-LCD depends on the reduction of its back-light intensity. However, the reduction of back-light intensity would lead to image become darker, therefore, it is necessary to enhance image to compensate it. In this paper, a TFT-LCD low power consumption algorithm is proposed. Firstly,the local contrast enhancement method is used in the proposed algorithm to process the image and the contrast factor and the luminance factor of the local contrast enhancement method is dynamically selected based on the image content. Besides, the proportionality factor of back-light adjustment is decided based on the luminance factor. According to the experimental results, the TFT-LCD low power consumption algorithm can achieve a 50.58% reducing rate of power consumption with the guarantee of image quality.As the next generation flat-panel screen, OLED, which will replace the TFT-LCD, is growing maturity. And with the increasing demand for large flat-panel screen, the power consumption of OLED would be a big issue for the cruising ability of smart mobile terminals. Therefore, it is necessary to study low power consumption on OLED. Since the display principle between TFT-LCD and OLED is fundamentally different, low power consumption algorithm using on TFT-LCD can not be used on OLED. Therefore, low power consumption algorithm is proposed for OLED in this paper. The power consumption model of OLED shows that reducing the image pixel is an efficient method to decrease the power consumption. However, reducing the image pixel excessively will result the significant deterioration of display quality. Therefore, the low power consumption in OLED display must ensure the image display quality. The Brightness adjustment strategy based on the image salient and Weber-Fechner law is the core part of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm defines that the salient mean of image is salient threshold. For the salient pixel, the adjustment of pixel brightness should base on the Weber law, and for the non-salient pixels, a linear mapping relationship between the significant value and the pixel intensity values is designed to determine the new pixel intensity values. According to the experimental result, the OLED low power consumption algorithm can achieve a 10.16% reducing rate of power consumption and guarantee the image quality simultaneously.In general, the proposed algorithms in this paper can reduce the power consumption of TFT-LCD and OLED with the guarantee of image quality.
