The acquisition and cataloging department of library is a very important part in library. The main target of the cataloging department is the inquiry, verification, recording, organization and description for the resources. The job of the cataloging department is the most basic and important. Although the work of cataloging department is basic, it is essential.The entire resources of library, including books and other information resources are processed by the cataloging department. The information can’t be used directly. It needs to be dealt with by the cataloging department first. So whether the reader can take the advantage of a variety of information resources is closely related to the cataloging department. At the same time,the cataloging department’s work can also directly affect the level of service throughout the library. Therefore, the quality of work and how to improve the efficiency of the cataloging department became the key research. Now we are in the information age, the characteristics of the information age is the knowledge and information are showing explosive generation.Meanwhile the readers have higher requirements for timeliness and professionalism. So how to make the readers more satisfied and how to meet their most effective utilization of books demand has become a major problem faced by libraries.This is a problem faced by the external sector, and by the cataloging department.This article’s object is library cataloging department, using a combination of existing former and competent editorial head of behavioral event interview manner. At last I sum up twenty competencies belonging to the leader of cataloging department. After a series of statistical analysis, the competency model of the cataloging department’s leader can be built.This article’s research methods include behavioral event interviews, statistical analysis. The main conclusions of this article are as follows:(1) Cocluding twenty competencies of the cataloging department’s leader. Divide these competencies into four factors:interpersonal skills, knowledge skills, management ability, personality traits.(2)Via population statistics, I obtained no significant effect of gender on competence, but different work experience, education and jobs can significantly affect the level of competence.
