Multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) technique has shown its superiorities in increasing spectrum efficiency and capacity of a communication system, and has got rapid development and wide application. Many theoretical studies and applications demonstrate that the MIMO communication technique at millimeter wave(MMW) bands has a great potential of development and a broad applied prospect. This thesis focuses on the channel model and its capacity characteristics of the satellite-earth MIMO communication system at MMW bands. In what follows, its main contents are summarized: The MIMO wireless communication system is introduced briefly. The technologies of space diversity and space multiplexing used in a MIMO communication system, as well as their encoding, are discussed. The mathematical expression of the channel model for a MIMO wireless communication system is introduced. The effects of attenuation, scattering and noise in clear and rain environments are analyzed, simulated and discussed. Based on these effects, the models for investigating the channel fading coefficients of the satellite-earth MIMO channel at MMW bands in those environments are established. Combining with the nature of the signal processing of different coding technologies for MIMO communication systems, the equivalent models of channel capacity for the MIMO communication systems are given. The channel capacity of the satellite-earth MIMO link at MMW bands in clear and rain environments is investigated. The channel capacity characteristics of 2×2 STBC, 2×2 V-BLAST and 2×2 STTC are simulated in clear and rain environments, and the simulation results are analyzed and discussed in detail. It can be concluded from the simulation results that the three kinds of encoding can improve the channel capacity relative to the SISO communication system, but the STTC coding is the best way in increasing the channel capacity. The results in this thesis provide theoretical and technical support and are useful for developing and designing the satellite-earth MIMO communication systems at MMW bands.
