Meteor trial communication is a kind of burst communication which relies on the ionization trails of meteors to reflect and scatter radio waves. Meteor trial communication has following advantages, long communication distance, strong anti-interference ability and low probability of detected and intercepted by the enemy, not subject to nuclear explosion, which has high military significance and broad application prospects. Due to the fact that meteor trail channel is random and burst, time-variable attenuation, Meteor trial communication has low data throughput, low channel utilization and complex network operation, which presents high requirements of link layer transport efficiency and network layer protocolFirst of all, the characteristics of meteor trail communications are introduced, which are randomness, time-varying characteristics, space division. According to above characteristics, the principle of meteor trail communications is analyzed basically. A technical design project of meteor trail communications controller is presented combined with system functions and indexes. Then, hardware platform project is designed according to the general design project, and sub-function modules are introduced. System software structure is designed in detail, and function modules are presented based on system requirements and introduced completely. At last, test steps and process of the equipment are described. Each index of the system meets the design requirements proved by the data of system tests and field tests.The research results and innovations of the paper are listed following:(1) Adopting native high integration SOC, software and hardware platform of network and link layer are designed, which reduces design complexity of hardware, promotes processing efficiency of system. The software and hardware have complete proprietary intellectual property rights, which promotes control ability of equipments.(2) Based on the characteristics of meteor trail communications, high effective transport frame structure and protocol of link layer are designed. The efficiency of protocol frame can reach 80% up, which achieves channel fast response and raises channel utilization.(3) High efficiency network protocol. System design capacity can access ten thousands meteor trail nodes nearly, which makes meteor trail communications have ability of large-scale network communication.(4) Adopting reduced layers and cross layer technologies, protocol processing efficiency is insured, combined the characteristics of meteor trail communications mechanism, which can provide reference to other communication system protocol designs.
