With the rapid development of computer, digital image processing technology has become more and more popular and gradually in the life of various fields emerge.Edge is one of the most basic features of the image, whether the correct detection of image edge for people to understand and apply the correct edge has a vital role. Image edge detection technology is to understand its characteristics by detecting the edge of the image, it is the basis of image analysis, image processing, feature extraction, machine vision and other advanced technology. Image edge detection technology to explore and research, so that it can quickly and accurately extract the image edge information; improve the accuracy of edge detection has become an important part of the study. This paper mainly studies the traditional image edge detection technology, an improved algorithm is proposed and applied to license plate recognition, the specific work includes the following aspects :First of all, the research significance and background of digital image edge detection technology are summarized, and the current research status at home and abroad are introduced. Summarizes the theory and method of digital image edge detection technology, and makes a simple classification, and looks forward to the edge detection technology points and development trend.Secondly, the traditional edge detection algorithm is introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of them are analyzed by comparing the form. Although the traditional Canny algorithm has a better comprehensive performance, but the l ack of adaptive capacity, this paper proposes an adaptive Canny edge detection algorithm based on iterative algorithm. Based on the advantages of the original algorithm, the improved algorithm can effectively improve the ability to remove the false edges and accurately locate the edges.Considering that most of the edge detection is realized through programming on Matlab platform, it is time-consuming and can’t meet the requirements of practical application. In this paper, the combination of algorithm and Open CV platform, greatly shorten the running time of the program, and effectively improve the efficiency of the work.Last of all, the paper introduces the basic principle and the system of license plate recognition, edge detection technique is applied in license plate automatic recognition system, put forward an automatic recognition method based on edge detection and matching of license plate.
