In recent years, rapid expansion of the number of motor vehicles has led to the increasing complexity of ground transportation, so society holds high expectations for safe and orderly operation of roads and modern intelligent transportation systems. Video traffic information detection technology with the advantages of easy to use, easy to maintain, large monitoring range, less impact on the environment, access to information and more quickly becomes a hot topic,and has greatly promoted the development of human society road traffic. However, these techniques have much room for improvement in the timeliness, accuracy, and applicability, therefore, this thesis is committed to do some research work in these areas, which focuses on the two algorithms and related technologies of video vehicle detection and speed detection, and it uses MATLAB as a platform to develop video-based vehicle detection and overspeed alarm system by the GUI toolkit.In terms of video vehicle detection, this paper proposes vehicle detection zone, the vehicle identification field, the second vehicle detection zone,etc,on definitions and related theories, then use a bottom-up strategy constantly shrinking region of interest, thus greatly improving the computational efficiency, provide a basic guarantee for the entire real-time vehicle detection system. Meanwhile, based on these theories and strategies this thesis proposes a complete vehicle detection algorithm, and makes mathematical analysis and simulation to the algorithm itself,and analysis and simulation results show that the vehicle detection algorithm in this paper is accurate and efficient.Based on vehicle detection algorithm, this paper designs a flexible,and easy to use speed detection algorithm. First, detect the vehicle of a front view and extract the vehicle identification field, and then proposed based on the characteristics of the vehicle detection zone point calculation and matching algorithm and give the relevant mathematical proof. Finally, by ease of use and good vision measurement technology, to achieve physical displacement of the vehicle calculated to obtain instantaneous running speed of the vehicle.Through analysis and system testing of two algorithms mentioned above, the proposed video vehicle detection algorithm for detecting speed urban roads, highways, etc. are effective. Meanwhile, the thesis tests the speeding detection system, the experimental results show that the whole system has high accuracy, timeliness and applicability.
