Image Cross Stitch Stylization

Cross stitch is loved by people for its consuming visual artistic effect.However, the traditional way of creating the spectrum of cross stitch embroidery is quite inconvenient. It consumes so much time and labor effort. Also, it raises a professional skills requirements for the spectrum designer. Even if the spectrum is created, it takes a long time to finished the corresponding cross stitch. Not until the cross stitch is finished, we can not obtain the final visual effect of this works. Such feedback is too slow for the modification of the spectrum creation.Therefore, we present a computer method for stylizing normal 2D image into cross stitch style image in this paper. Essentially, it is an image stylization method. It takes 2D image as input and outputs the corresponding cross stitch style image. In between the processing steps,it can also output the corresponding spectrum of cross stitch embroidery.This method first abstracts the input image by eliminating the high frequency details and culling the background. Then we use color clustering for simplifying the color of the image and use color matching for normalizing the color of the image. After all these works, we can extract the spectrum of cross stitch embroidery by dividing the image into grid and calculating the grid based color together with stitch type. As we have a spectrum, we can select some pieces of texture inside the prepared library of real cross stitch sampling image, then using colorization,border replacement, quilting method to synthesis the cross stitch style image guiding by the spectrum.The cross stitch stylization method proposed in this paper can help people creating spectrum of cross stitch embroidery rapidly also with low professional skill requirement. People can also obtain the final rendering effect of the corresponding cross stitch. Such timely feedback can help the designer further modifying the spectrum in human effort. This method can improve the efficiency of the cross stitch creation. At the same time, cross stitch stylization is one kind of image stylization method, similar to oil painting stylization, watercolor stylization,sketch stylization and etc. Research on this field can enrich the researching of image stylization.
