With the rapid development of Internet, network measurement for the study of the Internet network behavior, performance protocol design, development of network equipment, network planning and construction, network management and operation has a more special meaning. But,it’s more difficult to measure active network behavior and performance. Now, many international measurement work teams have done many meaning works, such as building worldwide measurement network and union database.However, as the network link speed increases, to achieve network measurement algorithm in a pure software way has several disadvantages, such as packet timestamp accuracy, less stable in sending consecutive probes and so on. In order to improve measurement accuracy and reliability, this paper presents a new network measurement architecture using hardware network device, which can effectively improve the accuracy of packet timestamps and reliability of packet sending.The main research contents and innovations include :(1) In order to overcome the shortcomings of traditional software methods, this paper proposes network measurement architecture-HPAN, to support multi-stream parallel measurement, high precision packet timestamps and stable probe packet transmission. There is a detailed description of the hardware and software of the communication mechanism, HPAN measurement application programming model.(2) Based on network switching experimental platform—Net Magic, we achieve HPAN. This paper proposes a new protocol for the communication between software and hardware, called HSRP. The detailed design and implement of hardware and software are described here.(3) The system’s core functionality has been verified. Respectively kernel mode, user mode to achieve lower were compared, the results show that the proposed model can effectively improve the measurement accuracy of the packet and the inter-packet delay accuracy for sending, then effectively improve the measurement accuracy of the results.This paper presents the architecture of HPAN proposed to achieve high precision packet timestamp, and solve issues that the interval between sending packets can not be precisely controlled. We design a accurate hardware transmission method, effectively improves network measurement algorithm the accuracy and reliability. With hardware-based network measurement platform has important application value.
