With the features of flexible operation, open space and comfortable interaction, gesture interaction on machine-vision is becoming the mainstream way of realizing the natural interaction between human and computers. Achieving gesture interaction has a strong professional, which makes its designers and developers takes technique as the core while ignoring the needs of users, resulting in the gap between technology and user. Therefore it is essential to change into the user-centered design concept. Gesture interaction is a way to emphasize the interactive nature while the mapping of the interactive device has a very important role for enhancing the naturalness of interaction. Users often have different mapping preferences when doing gesture interaction. The study of user mapping preferences can effectively guide the design of a suitable mapping, improve user-centered interaction design and user experience levels. This research takes the users’ mapping preferences of gesture interaction on machine-vision as the research object. The research firstly reviews the concept of space mapping of gesture interaction, analyses three aspects of the mapping of gesture interaction on machine-vision. Secondly, the research analyses the research status of the users’ mapping preferences, and explains the impact and contact between space relationship and users’ mapping preferences. Finally, there is a series of experiments on the users’ preferences and users’ appropriate operating space when in mapping space of gesture interaction. The results of the research show that in the mapping space of gesture interaction on machine-vision, the target’s position and the operating directions have a significant influence on the users’ mapping preferences, while there is a linear relationship between the perspective and the preferences. In addition, the target size, operating directions, mapping ratio all have an impact on the operating performance, while the appropriate operating space with different operating directions or Index of Difficulty is also different. These conclusions provide important reference value to the design of user-centered gesture interaction. What’s more, the conclusions has an important help to a wide range of applications on natural gesture-based human-computer interaction.
