Antenna, which as an energy conversion device, is indispensable in people’s daily lives. Antenna is used for more and more situations, and people also have higher requirements with the development of technology. Microstrip antennas are very popular in hand-held terminal device due to its small size and easy conformal and any other characteristics. It can make some behavior easier such as miniaturization, multiband and broadband of hand held terminal device. While concerned for microstrip antenna, waveguide slot array also attracted people’s attention. Generally, the conventional phased array radar antenna is used to phase shifters to achieve beam scanning. However, people come to attracted by waveguide slot array because the phase shifter fed system is very complexity and particularity. Waveguide slot array has a compact structure, small size, light weight. Narrow slotted waveguide antenna array is taken seriously due to that it is easy to implement a low sidelobe and even ultra sidelobe radiation pattern. And it is applied in many microwave communications and radar systems where need a narrow beam or beamforming. Therefore, based on the existing of compact antenna, for the needs of handheld terminal equipment and beam scanning of phased array, we have done the following research:① Studying on the technology of coplanar waveguide and microstrip antenna planar structure, proposed two different antennas, one is the M planar antenna, another is a novel planar inverted F antenna. These two kinds of antenna structure are compact, small size, and coplanar, and less cost compared to antenna without coplanar structure. The simulated and measured results show that the reorganization of antenna is suitable for the handheld terminals.② The conventional phased array is generally complex, and high cost. For the cost and size limits of missile-borne antenna, we proposed a leaky-wave antenna based on the composite left/right-handed transmission. The simulation results show that it can implement beam scanning by controlling the length of the stub. The antenna works at 5.8GHz and the main beam could scan from 11° to 102°.
