Substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) is a waveguide transmission line, it can use to transfer the electromagnetic wave. At present, Electronic Systems have strict requirements for the integrations, bandwidth, production cost and loss of the electronic components. The rectangular waveguide has the properties with low insertion loss, low radiation, high power capacity and high Q, but it is hard to integrate by massive volume. Microstrip line is low cost and light except high loss and low power capacity. Coplanar waveguide is a simple structure, that is easy to integrate but the big crosstalk and low quality factor. However, with the emergence of SIW, it brought new hope to radio frequency integrated circuits.The substrate integrated waveguide borrow advantages of both the rectangular waveguide and the microstrip, such as, high Q, low loss just like rectangular waveguide. SIW is mainly using the substrate and periodic of two column metal holes to transfer he electromagnetic wave. And the distance between two columns of metal hole determine the work frequency of SIW. With the fundamentals of design theory SIW can be successfully applied on the RF circuits.In this paper, the study is based on the project of substrate integrated waveguide microwave RF circuits. The paper introduces mostly the basic concept of SIW, analysis methods and the transmission characteristics of it. By the discontinuity of SIW, we designed the conversion structures between SIW and coplanar waveguide(CPW) and microstrip line, SIW right-angle bend structure, SIW structure with the perceptual metal bar. For wideband and miniaturization, we designed and simulated the SIW mixer and SIW antenna based on the theory of SIW. Finally the obtained physical parameters of processing, tested to meet the requirement. Experiments proved that compared with the heavy traditional waveguide, SIW is more suitable for system integration. Half mode substrate integrated waveguide antenna achieves the miniaturization, low cost, and high gain, that is better than other antennas. To the integration of the microwave and millimeter wave circuits, SIW will play a vital role.
