With the rapid development of Internet, the system area network is becoming an important part of the high-performance computer system and data center and has been widely popularized and applied. However, what result in great challenges the management and optimization of system area network must be confronted with are larger-scale network, much more internal links, the more complex network traffic behavior, rather more network applications being sensitive to network performance in high-performance computer cluster or data center. In order to maintain a stable and controllable network, there need fine-grained network performance measurement and diagnosis for the whole network more timely and accurately. Therefore, the performance measurement of system area network has attracted much attention of network managers and researchers.Based on the analysis and summary of typical system area networks, network performance metrics and related methods of measurement, the paper identifies specific objectives of the study about performance measurement. Through further studying of network tomography and the performance measurement architecture, the paper also introduces the design and implementation of a measurement system called NPMS(Network Performance Measurement System). The main research work of this paper includes:(1) Proposed a performance measurement architecture for the large-scale system area network called MASAN(measurement architecture for system area network) which adopts loosely coupling hierarchical structure, including view layer, management layer, control layer and data layer. MASAN improves the efficiency of the management of performance measurement by the methods of the generation of measurement strategy, the management and analysis of measurement data uniformly and the concurrency control mechanism of control layer. MASAN also has good scalability.(2) Considering the larger and larger scale of system area network and numerous internal links, the paper proposed a performance measurement method called NTSP(Network Tomography based on the Strategy of Pretreatment). Through the logical processing of the actual physical topology and finding the known performance information of logical links, NTSP reduces the scale of the speculation of link performance parameters and the computational complexity of the mathematical model for network tomography, and ensures the speed and accuracy of the diagnosis of network links. The paper also verifies the effectiveness of NTSP through simulation experiment.(3) The paper designs and implements a measurement system called NPMS, which is on the base of the performance measurement architecture called MASAN and adopts the idea of centralized control and multi-point distributed measurement. By adjusting the network measurement strategies, NPMS can achieve the multi-granularity performance measurement for large-scale system area network, reducing the impact of performance measurement on the target network. Through deploying in the actual network, the effectiveness of NPMS is verified.
