As the growth of Internet traffic is taking shape, the concern of energy consumption in network infrastructure, especially wired networks, is becoming increasingly important for network operators. Economizing the energy consumption not only can help to reduce CO2 emissions but also can significantly reduce the ISP’s cost. The energy consumption accounts for approximate 1% of the total energy demand in one country, and it costs about 70% of the ISP’s operating cost. In this scenario, energy efficient routers are important and promising devices in the roadmap towards green communication and networking. This paper mainly discusses power scaling algorithms for single router and the depleyment for these energy efficient routers, and more details are as follows:By analyzing three types of real traffic from the core routers, access routers and home routers, this paper shows the design opportunities for the energy efficient routers with scaling in the view of network loads. We studied the principles to implement frequency scaling for routers in practice, and proposed four algorithms in detail based on two design methodologies, periodical scaling and threshold scaling. On the basis of energy efficient router, the paper presents a QoS aware open-loop deployment method for deploying multiple EERs in network. The method takes a short-term traffic forecast model to reduce the packet delays along the routing path. And then further proposes a QoS aware feedback control deployment method for multiple EERs. This method use dynamic feedback among routers to constrain the QoS.The simulations for the four fine-grained power scaling algorithms use real network traffic in two cases, three frequencies and six frequencies, and drew the conclusion that the EER methods can generally save 40% power consumption. We also addressed the algorithm choices for different situationsAt the end of paper, we evaluate the above algorithms by performing simulations. The results show that QoS Aware Dynamic Power Scaling Algorithms for Deploying Energy Efficient Routers are energy efficieny while controlling the packet delay.
